Week 5 Story: Gossip and the Swim Day

Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, Tweety and Porky Pig loved the time of year when the sun began to rise a little earlier, stay a little longer, and fall a little later. They all loved this time of year because they knew that Spring was arriving and summer would not be far behind.

Today was the first day that the water down at the spring would finally be warm enough to go for a swim. Everyone was thrilled and could not wait to get down to the spring and beat the rush of people who would join them in the afternoon.

As they began to prepare their day and pack their bags, Daffy Duck began to talk. He asked the group, "Have you guys heard what Sylvester was telling people last night at the movies?"

The rest of the gang thought that Daffy Duck was just talking like he always does and wanted to start drama, but they all joined in and replied, "No, what did he say?"

"Well, you are not going to believe me. But, he was telling us that you Porky Pig were being cruel to him and that you said you were not our friends but that you hang out with us so that you can report back to Tasmanian Devil on what we are doing."

Instantly they looked to Porky Pig for an explanation.

He was dumbfound and had no idea why Sylvester would say such a thing. "I would never say that about you guys. You are my best friends! How could you ever think I would do such a thing. Me and Tasmanian Devil are not even acquaintances, let alone friends. He is always antagonizing me."

The rest of the group felt somewhat bad for even thinking such a thing about their friend; however, they were still skeptical.

Tweety was the first to speak up, "I believe you Porky Pig. You would never talk about us behind our back to Tasmanian Devil."

"Thanks Tweety," Porky Pig replied solemnly. "I hope the rest of you guys believe me too. I just want to head down to the spring and forget about Tasmanian Devil altogether."

Despite not quite believing him yet, Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny decided that they would give him the benefit of the doubt and forget about what Tasmanian Devil had said for the day. After all, they all four wanting to go swimming and this was not about to ruin their day.

After the group finally was able to pack everything up and shoo Tweety Bird out the door, they were off to the Spring to enjoy the beautiful day at hand.

Author's Note:
For this Story I chose to mash up Gossip Spreads. In the original story, Rama is told about the gossip that his people are spreading about him and his queen Sita. Rama becomes upset in this story and sends his people away. I decided to use the overarching theme of gossip in this story along with the Looney Tunes characters because it is something that many people can relate to.

  1. I love how you completely turned the Ramayana story of gossip that included Rama listening to the rumors about his wife Sita's infidelity and turned it into an innocent gossip session between the Looney Tunes characters! I really enjoyed the fact that you gave these characters compassion toward their friend, they did not believe the gossip being spread and continued to have a good day at the spring. I wonder what would happen if the characters did not quite believe their friend? Would this affect their spring day, probably. If Daffy Duck is always an instigator of drama, then why did they believe him when he accused Porky Pig of being fake? Does Porky have a history of being a bit flaky? I found myself curious to see if there was more in this story! I really enjoyed that I wanted to learn more about these friends! This was a well written story, good job!

  2. Hey Carlee! I like the parallel theme between Rama’s experience with gossip and Porky Pig’s experience. Both have to try to prevent rumors from hurting their reputation, and both know they are false but have to convince others. The Looney Tunes characters are definitely more relatable and approachable. All in all, your re-telling of Gossip Spreads was really creative and unique!
